Trying to set up internet connection on my laptop, keeps saying that there is no dial tone, it does detect the modem, and the it says the modem is working properly, and my desktop pc connects, but not my laptop, tried it at a different location and it still does the same thing. It also says I have the right driver for the modem too, so what is up with this thing??? HELP

If everything is plugged in correctly (ie., the phone cord is going directly from the phone jack in the wall into the line jack on the modem) and you have verified that you have a dialtone then the modem itself is probably bad..
You can also verify that you dont have any services such as Call Notes (voice mail) on your phone line. Make sure that you dont have to dial any codes to get an outside line. Try adding 3 commas in front of the phone number.. Also go to Start > Programs > Start Up and make sure that there are no programs in there that could possibly interfere with the modem. Even though your modem says that its working properly, all that means is that it responds to the command which your OS sends to it but the circuit on the modem which receives and utilizes the dialtone might have been damaged (could of been a power surge from a storm, lighting, etc...) There are no other software settings that turn the dialtone on/off Try reinstalling the modem and if that doesnt help, try replacing it (if its a PCMCIA modem). If its an internal modem on a notebook then you will have to disable it and get a pc card modem instead. -------------------- Steve -- MCP, A+, I-Net +, Blackberry

You could also verify that the dialer is using the correct modem, or possibly recreate the dialer. Make sure that the cord is plugged into the modem port (will have 2 or 4 brass pins in it) and not the ethernet socket (will have 8 pins in it), that could be the cause also. Let us know how it works.
